Albion

After the extremely positive reception to our Ashtree Road project, Graeme Nicholls Architects were appointed again by the same developer, Merchant Homes, to design this scheme for 160 flats on an urban brownfield site in the Ibrox area of Glasgow, which is currently used as a matchday car park for Rangers Football Club.

Our ambition for Albion is to create a residential development that is both sympathetic to and celebratory of the history of the neighbourhood. The site itself has seen several uses over the years, including a playing home to the Albion Greyhound Stadium and, more recently, as a training ground for Rangers Football Club.

Regarding housing as a typology, the established model in the Ibrox area is tenemental perimeter blocks of 4 storeys, and we are proposing this as the model for our development too.

Historical maps show that the greyhound track had a ‘bowl’ footprint.

Our proposal references this with a plan which consists of two U-shaped blocks formed of uniform brick bays featuring stacked windows with arched tops. This form alludes to both the formal consistency of historic tenement blocks found in Ibrox, and also some architectural features typically associated with sports buildings and stadia. Our scheme also proposes a monochromatic colourway for the buildings with their red hues matching the iconic Ibrox Main Stand.

Planning approval was awarded for the proposals in February 2023, and we are excited to see the scheme progress on-site over the next period.
