Albion

Graeme Nicholls Architects has designed a new residential scheme on an urban brownfield site in the Ibrox area of Glasgow. The project, being developed by the JR Group in partnership with Wheatley Group, will deliver 160 new homes on land previously used as a matchday car park for Rangers Football Club.

Our ambition for Albion is to create a residential development that is both sympathetic to and celebratory of the history of the neighbourhood. The site itself has seen several uses over the years, including serving as the Albion Greyhound Stadium and, more recently, as a training ground for Rangers Football Club. Our proposals reflect the traditional four-storey tenemental perimeter block model common in Ibrox, comprising two U-shaped blocks defined by uniform brick bays and arched windows. The design draws on the formal consistency of the area’s historic tenements while incorporating references to the site’s sporting heritage, including the ‘bowl’ form of the former greyhound track. A monochromatic red palette further ties the development to the iconic Ibrox Main Stand.

Planning approval was awarded for the proposals in February 2023, and we are excited to see the scheme progress on site over the next period, with a start on site scheduled for Autumn 2025.
