The Live, the Work & the Wardrobe

Established in 2021, The Davidson Prize was created to honor the legacy of Alan Davidson (1960–2018), a visionary architect, artist, technologist, and the founder of the London-based architecture visualization studio, Hayes Davidson. The inaugural prize, under the theme 'home/work,' was selected by The Alan Davidson Foundation, reflecting a focus on the evolving relationship between home and workspaces.

Our shortlisted entry, developed in collaboration with visualizers Secchi Smith and Lewis McNeill, examines the potential for modest communal spaces in apartment buildings—such as landings and hallways—to be reimagined for multiple uses. These spaces could temporarily serve as areas for work, living, and social interaction, helping to alleviate the isolation often associated with working from home. Drawing inspiration from C.S. Lewis’ novel ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, our design features movable timber elements like doors, hatches, benches, and countertops. These kinetic, human-scaled components enable shared entrance hallways to be adapted for various needs.
