Wiston Lodge Live Build

In 2013, Graeme Nicholls worked with first-year architecture students from the University of Strathclyde on a live-build project at Wiston Lodge, South Lanarkshire. The project involved designing and building 12 unique structures using reclaimed and salvaged materials to explore the concept of shelter. Before construction, the students focused on creating physical models with materials that reflected the final design's aesthetics and characteristics.

The project began with each student creating individual designs which, after intense discussion and debate, were whittled down to 12 which were selected for construction. The process included creating scale prototypes and drawings, prefabricating components in the architecture department workshop, and assembling the shelters over two days at Wiston Lodge. This project showcased the students’ ability to turn innovative designs into physical structures, highlighting their practical skills and creative problem-solving.
