North Four, Pennywell, Edinburgh
For the fourth and final phase of Urban Union's major housing-led regeneration project in the Pennywell neighbourhood of north Edinburgh, we partnered closely with the client to design 94 homes for private sale, contributing significantly to the ongoing transformation of this area. Our involvement spanned from the initial feasibility stages through detailed planning to on-site delivery.
Our design features a series of terraced houses, with blocks ranging from three to six homes. The new blocks embrace the terraced housing typology, characterised by the repetition of mid-terrace units and distinct houses at the ends. Pitched roofs, tall windows, and clearly defined front and back gardens are key elements that contribute to a cohesive architectural language, harmonising with both the earlier Pennywell redevelopment phases and the broader local context. This approach ensures continuity in materiality and detailing while also relating to the architectural characteristics of the surrounding area.
The first residents moved into their new homes in the autumn of 2024, with the overall project due to be completed in 2025.
